Biography

Alexander Humala is a Belarusian-born conductor who combines Slavic temperament with European tradition. He works across the symphonic, operatic and choral repertoire. He was Artistic Director of the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Kraków, Principal Conductor of the Belarus State Music Capella "Sonorus". He has conducted the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, the Zagreb Philharmonic, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, among others, and in the theatre at the Opéra National de Lyon, the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre, Wrocław Opera and Baltic Opera.
His soloists have included Gautier Capuçon, Ivo Pogorelić, Jan Lisiecki, Boris Berezovsky, Baiba Skride and Aleksandra Kurzak. He has worked with Krzysztof Penderecki, Alexander Raskatov, Paweł Mykietyn and Elliot Goldenthal on their own music, and recorded Karol Szymanowski's Symphony No. 2 in its original version with the Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra. His performances have been broadcast by Mezzo, Arte TV and Polish Television and Radio. He studied choral conducting at the Belarusian State Academy of Music in Minsk and orchestral conducting at Codarts Rotterdam, and took first prizes at the international choral conducting competitions in Riga and Wrocław.
